Lingerie to the rescue!

Noah Shachtman at Wired has a fantastic story about what happened to the New York Army National Guard's 69th Infantry Regiment during Hurricane Sandy on Monday night.

They were left without power, hot water and most means of communication when the storm hit.

And then they were saved - by Victoria's Secret.

"We were dead in the water until Victoria's Secret showed up," Capt. Brendan Gendron, the Regiment's operations officer, tells Wired.

You see, they asked for help from the producers of the Victoria's Secret fashion show, which is held annually at the Regiment's armory on 25th St. and Lexington Ave. in Manhattan.

Fortunately, Victoria's Secret had brought in eight huge generators for the show. By 7 PM Tuesday night, the armory was fully powered.

It's not just the power Victoria's Secret helped out with. The crew had previously set up an internet line on a microwave dish on the roof, and put routers in the Regiment's command center to help with communications. Plus they offered up a forklift - which the Regiment didn't have - to help out with the food distribution effort.

Video Shows Voting Booth Software Changing Votes

Democracy in action. We have no way to know the validity of this video, but it is currently going viral as it shows someone attempting to vote for Barack Obama in Pennsylvania, while the voting software checks a vote for Mitt Romney instead.

As you can see, his finger clearly checks the Obama box, but the software checks the vote for Mitt. Who knows if there is any criminal mischief involved, or if this is just an unexplained error. Either way, be careful you're voting who for who you want to vote for on Election Day.

According to the man who shot the video:

"I'm the guy who shot the video, hopefully this doesn't get burried. You guys have questions, I have answers. My wife and I went to the voting booths this morning before work. There were 4 older ladies running the show and 3 voting booths that are similar to a science fair project in how they fold up. They had an oval VOTE logo on top center and a cartridge slot on the left that the volunteers used to start your ballot. I initially selected Obama but Romney was highlighted.

I assumed it was being picky so I deselected Romney and tried Obama again, this time more carefully, and still got Romney.

Being a software developer, I immediately went into troubleshoot mode. I first thought the calibration was off and tried selecting Jill Stein to actually highlight Obama. Nope. Jill Stein was selected just fine. Next I deselected her and started at the top of Romney's name and started tapping very closely together to find the 'active areas'. From the top of Romney's button down to the bottom of the black checkbox beside Obama's name was all active for Romney. From the bottom of that same checkbox to the bottom of the Obama button (basically a small white sliver) is what let me choose Obama.

Stein's button was fine. All other buttons worked fine. I asked the voters on either side of me if they had any problems and they reported they did not. I then called over a volunteer to have a look at it. She him hawed for a bit then calmly said "It's nothing to worry about, everything will be OK." and went back to what she was doing. I then recorded this video.

EDIT: There is a lot of speculation that the footage is edited. I'm not a video guy, but if it's possible to prove whether a video has been altered or not, I will GLADLY provide the raw footage to anyone who is willing to do so. The jumping frames are a result of the shitty camera app on my Android phone, nothing more.

Build Muscle Without Lifting a Weight

Pumping iron is only part of the muscle-building formula. "Recovery is just as important," says Todd Durkin, C.S.C.S., author of The IMPACT! Body Plan. That's because weightlifting creates microtears in your muscles, and hitting the gym again too hard too soon can undermine the repair process (also known as muscle growth). "Your body needs at least one day of rest between workouts," says Durkin. Follow his four tips to make the most of your downtime.

Feed Your Muscles
Lifting weights makes your metabolism race as your body works to replenish energy and repair muscle tissue. "If you don't take in enough calories and protein, you won't have the resources you need to recover," says Durkin. He recommends consuming 300 to 500 additional calories on workout days, and skewing those calories toward protein, the building block of muscle. "Shoot for 1 gram per pound of body weight," says Durkin. Do you really need to eat protein within 15 minutes of working out? Discover The Truth About Protein.

Roll With It
Here's why you need a regular massage, or at least a foam roller: "Both can help break up the scar tissue that's a natural consequence of lifting," says Durkin. That not only speeds the repair process and reduces soreness but also improves range of motion, reports a study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. "Spend 5 minutes using a foam roller on your quads, hams, glutes, hips, and lower back before a workout and before bed," Durkin says. "If you can, also visit a massage therapist twice a month." (Foam rolling is an easy-and cheap-way to keep your body moving like a well-oiled machine. Check out The Best Injury-Preven tion Workout You're Not Doing.)

Catch More Z's
Muscle building doesn't shut down when you hit the sack. "Your body repairs a lot of damage as you sleep, so it's critical to get as much as you can," Durkin says. Indeed, a lack of shut-eye can increase muscle loss by up to 60 percent, according to researchers in Brazil. The reason: Your body produces its greatest surge of growth hormone while you're sleeping. What's more, the fatigue that goes hand in hand with too little sleep can torpedo your workout performance. Your goal: 7 to 8 hours of quality slumber every night. Snooze soundly through the evening with these 6 Foods for Better Sleep.

Take a Cold One
Tough workouts don't have to result in aching muscles. Immersing yourself in cold water immediately after intense exercise can reduce delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) by nearly half, say scientists in Ireland. That means a faster return to peak performance and a lower likelihood of missing your next workout. Do this: Fill your bathtub with 50- to 59-degree Fahrenheit water (cool tap water is usually cold enough) and soak in it for 5 to 12 minutes in order to reduce the inflammation that causes DOMS, the scientists recommend.

Metalworker Is Amazed By His New 'Terminator' Arm

With the U.S. Military reporting a record number of amputations, researchers around the globe are working frantically to find the best way to fill the void left behind.

In a video posted today to the website ProChan, we can all see exactly what kind of answers these researchers have landed.

From the site's post:

"Nigel Ackland, 53, has been fitted with the Terminator-like carbon fibre mechanical hand which he can control with movements in his upper arm. The new bebionic3 myoelectric hand, which is also made from aluminium and alloy knuckles, moves like a real human limb by responding to Nigel's muscle twitches."

Ackland lost his arm six years ago to an accident at a metal smelting plant. He has since returned to work in order to support his family, but struggled with only the use of his left hand and a hook where his right ahd been.

As you can see now, he's been restored to some level of normalcy. Ackland says it's not only helped him on the job, but it's improved his morale as well.

"I have been blown away by the robotic hand, I could sit and watch it all day - I feel like the Terminator," Ackland tells SWNS, a UK-based news site. "When you lose a part of you it can take you into quite a dark place - it is a shame the bebionic3 isn't available for everyone, it is a whole new quality of life."

Though robotic prosthetics are nothing new, they've come leaps and bounds in the last few years.
In just this past week, with help from the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), Zac Vawter climbed the stairs of Chicago's tallest building, using his biological leg and a robotic leg in tandem. Vawter's nerves were successfully spliced with circuits, giving him control over the motion of the 'limb.'

RIC, which gets grants from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, also outfitted a female Marine in 2006 with a robotic arm, and even says the nerve/circuit connectivity allows her to 'feel' in a way.

Ackland's arm comes from a robotic prosthetics company called RSLSteeper which is based in both the United Kingdom and the U.S.
