A 26 year-old man who had spent eight days in a coma recently awoke to look his family in the eyes and tell them what they had been hoping to hear the entire time: how badly he was craving KFC.
For those of you that are unfamiliar, KFC doesn't stand for Kind, Friendly Chitchat. Sam Boughen - who has been living with a rare genetic liver disease and was on the verge of dying after going through two attempts at life-saving transplants - came to and used an app on an iPad to type out that he wanted a chicken burger meal from Kentucky Fried Chicken.
When asked why such an odd request was made, Sam responded "I don't eat many takeaways - but if I do it would be KFC. For some reason chicken must have been on my mind - because the first thing I asked for was a KFC chicken burger with gravy. Unfortunately I couldn't eat it because I was too ill."
Sam's story is actually a very brave and inspiring one. After a first liver transplant failed, he was placed on life support and his family was told to prepare for the worst. When a second liver was found from a donor, Sam was rushed into another nine-hour surgery. Unfortunately, Sam suffered complications when he contracted e. coli which is when he went into his 8-day coma.
Sam eventually stabilized and is now well enough to be back at home with his fiancé and their daughter, but will require medication on a daily basis to make sure his new liver continues to function normally.
So, at the very least, the man deserves that sandwich from Kentucky Fried Chicken.
