Cinco de Mayo Primer: Dobel and Leaving Tijuana

dobel tequila, dobel bottle, dobel, cinco de mayoIf you were on Mandatory a few weeks ago, you may have noticed our guide to the 10 Must-Haves for Every Bar. I got this idea after having one of the greatest cocktails I've ever had at a secret, hideaway bar in San Diego called "Noble Experiment." If you're ever in SD, you'll regret not having a nightcap (or three) at this speakeasy. Do a little research before you get there. They only take reservations via text and email.

So what was that cocktail I was raving about? It was called "Leaving Tijuana" and it was the perfect blend of spicy and citrusy. (Full disclosure: You have to like spicy cocktails if you're going to like the Leaving Tijuana.)

And even better, it's simple to make.

Leaving Tijuana
1 oz. Dobel tequila
1 oz. pepper-infused tequila (you can either make your own at home--it's not as hard as you think--or pick up one that's already infused with a spice)
.75 oz of fresh lime juice
.75 oz honey syrup
A pinch of smoked salt (you can get smoked salt online, at any specialty food store or even at some farmer's markets)

Combine ingredients in a shaker tin, fill with ice and shake vigorously. Strain slowly into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a pinch of smoked salt.
